Dog Cancer Treatments

Osteosarcoma

The most common type of bone tumor in dogs, canine osteosarcoma is an aggressive cancer that often metastasizes, and requires immediate treatment. Although there is no cure for osteosarcoma in dogs, there is the possibility of managing it, and helping your dog live a pain-free life. Symptoms of this type of cancer in dogs include growths, inflammation, fatigue, lameness, joint pain, and a failure to eat.

After diagnosis, surgery is often the most effective way to alleviate pain and discomfort. In addition to surgery, chemotherapy will often be added on to the treatment for osteosarcoma. Chemo will not cure the cancer, but it can stop or slow the spread to other parts of the dog's body, extending its life. Dogs have very few side effects from chemotherapy, and will not generally experience nausea or hair loss, as is common in humans.

We will work with you to make sure that your dog's pain is managed, as well as any inflammation that may occur. We have a variety of pain medications and anti-inflammatories that can be prescribed, and will help you determine if your dog's activity level needs to be reduced in order to prevent injury to the weakened bones.

Canine Lymphoma

Lymphoma, or cancer of the lymph nodes, is a very common type of cancer in dogs, and can be present without any symptoms. Depending on the stage of the cancer, and if it has metastasized in the dog's body, there are different options for treatment. Treatment may cure your dog, or it may be for the purpose of helping your dog remain pain-free for the rest of his or her life.

Chemotherapy is one option for lymphoma in dogs, and can often stop the cancer from progressing or spreading, even if it doesn't cure your pet entirely. Surgical intervention is another option, depending on the exact location of the tumors.
